A Downbeat Ending That Demands Redemption

The season 2 finale of The Night Manager left viewers stunned as Tom Hiddleston's Jonathan Pine suffered a crushing defeat. Not only did Hugh Laurie's Richard Roper kill his own son Teddy, who had turned against him, but Pine's ally Angela Burr, played by Olivia Colman, was also killed. Roper then returned to the UK to reunite with his other son, Danny, having stoked a civil war in Colombia. Speaking at Deadline's Contenders TV panel, creator and executive producer David Farr explained the reasoning behind the bleak conclusion. 'It was important to us all because the world is a tough place at the moment, and it didn't feel right not to reflect that,' he said. But he added that season 3 will carry a 'deep emotional and moral imperative' to deliver justice and redemption.

The Long Wait and the Challenge Ahead

There was a 10-year gap between the first and second seasons, partly because no one expected the show to continue after adapting John le Carré's novel. 'There was never any expectation that we would go ahead and make a second one, because you just don't do that to great novelists,' Farr said. But the first season was a huge hit, and le Carré was willing, though nothing had been prepared. Farr revealed that the breakthrough came when he conceived the character of Teddy Dos Santos, which allowed him to advance both the espionage and family drama. Now, work is progressing on season 3, but Farr admits to feeling daunted. 'Right now, I feel the deep weight of doom of stress about it because I'm the one who has to actually do the writing of the damn thing,' he said with a laugh. 'It's a huge challenge. It'll be very exciting. And it won't take as long as the last one, I promise.'

Hiddleston on Pine's Journey and the Trilogy

Tom Hiddleston also shared his thoughts on the series, linking its title to the protagonist's inner struggle. 'John le Carré was a genius, is one of the great writers of the 20th century – I believe that, spies or otherwise. He called it The Night Manager for a reason: [Jonathan Pine] is someone who is managing, containing darkness – principally the darkness inside himself,' Hiddleston said. He continued: 'But also he's managing the night. He's managing the world's darkness because he believes the light should win. And it all comes from him in a way, and it's such a thrill that we get to do it again. A trilogy feels tidy. And I hope I'm not that much older by the time we start.'

What Season 3 Will Address

Farr hinted that season 3 will directly grapple with the aftermath of season 2's dark ending. 'All of us want to see justice, redemption and we want to see something change, so I feel like season 3, there is actually a deep emotional and moral imperative to honour that,' he said. The creator emphasized that the show must reflect the tough realities of the world while offering a path forward. The third season will likely explore Pine's continued battle against Roper and the consequences of the Colombian civil war. With Roper back in the UK and reunited with his son, the stakes remain high for Pine, who has lost both his ally and the boy he had grown close to.

The Road Ahead for Fans

While Farr is hard at work on the script, fans may have to wait some time before the new season arrives. However, the creator assured that it won't take another decade. 'And it won't take as long as the last one, I promise,' he said. Seasons 1 and 2 of The Night Manager are currently available to stream on BBC iPlayer. As the series moves toward its third installment, the promise of redemption offers a glimmer of hope for Jonathan Pine and the audience alike.

The bottom line

  • Season 3 of The Night Manager will focus on redemption after the dark events of season 2.
  • Creator David Farr is writing the new season and promises a shorter wait than the 10-year gap between seasons 1 and 2.
  • Tom Hiddleston views the series as a trilogy, with Jonathan Pine's character arc centered on managing darkness.
  • The season 2 finale saw Richard Roper kill his son Teddy and Angela Burr, then return to the UK after stoking a Colombian civil war.
  • Farr felt the downbeat ending was necessary to reflect the current tough global climate.
