Fish oil supplements have long been linked with a variety of brain benefits, but new research suggests that one of the omega-3 fatty acids these supplements contain could interfere with the brain's repair processes. Fish Oil s'impose comme l'un des sujets qui mobilisent l'attention en Malaysia ce jeudi.

Les faits

  • Fish oil supplements have long been linked with a variety of brain benefits, but new research suggests that one of the omega-3 fatty acids these supplements contain could interfere with the brain's repair processes.
  • For many years, we have heard about the potential health benefits of fish oil due in part to their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Some fish oil supplements may disrupt brain healing in people who have experienced repeated mild traumatic brain injuries, a new study suggets.

  • Instead, the build-up of a specific omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil could potentially disrupt brain healing and assist with the accumulation of the protein tau in the brain, which is considered to be a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, via both human cell and mouse trials.

L'essentiel

Dans le détail, For many years, we have heard about the potential health benefits of fish oil due in part to their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids.

Sur le fond, some fish oil supplements may disrupt brain healing in people who have experienced repeated mild traumatic brain injuries, a new study suggets.

Concrètement, For many years, we’ve heard about the potential health benefits of fish oil due in part to their high concentration of omega-3 fatty acids.

Au-delà de ce constat, Instead, the build-up of a specific omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil could potentially disrupt brain healing and assist with the accumulation of the protein tau in the brain, which is considered to be a hallmark of Alzheimer’s disease, via both human cell and mouse trials.

Reste à préciser que At the study’s conclusion, researchers found that one specific omega-3 fatty acid in fish oil, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), was associated with a reduced repair capacity in the brain, potentially interfering with healing after a brain injury.

À noter par ailleurs : Trinh, who was not involved in the study, commented that its findings do not mean that fish oil is broadly harmful, but they do challenge the assumption that all omega-3 supplements are automatically brain-protective.

“But again, the findings depend a lot on context — this is a rodent study, the effects observed are not universal across all omega-3 fatty acids, the dose of EPA that would create an equivalent dose in human beings is unclear, the number and severity of TBIs isn’t clear and all the mice were male,” she cautioned.

Dans la foulée, a study of mice affected by mild traumatic head injuries showed that animals fed with diets containing the omega-3 fatty acid EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) performed worse on spatial memory and learning tasks after the injuries.

À ce stade, Rather than omega-3s aiding recovery as previous research has suggested, it seems EPA might actually get in the way of blood vessel repair, as it reprograms their metabolic activity.

Ce qui se dit

“Fish oil is widely used and generally considered beneficial, yet there are also observations in other areas of medicine suggesting that its effects may vary depending on the biological context, particularly during periods of tissue repair,” Albayram explained.

“In that sense, the model allowed us to study how dietary factors such as fish oil interact with the brain’s recovery mechanisms,” he continued. “The study evolved step by step, with the findings guiding the next questions.”

“This study does not prove that fish oil causes brain damage in the general population,” he continued. “But if someone has a history of repeated concussions or head trauma, they should talk with their doctor about why they are taking fish oil, what dose they are taking, and whether their supplement is EPA-heavy.”

Le contexte

Reste à préciser que Fish oil supplements are everywhere, and people take them for a range of reasons, often without a clear understanding of their long-term effects," says neuroscientist Onder Albayram, from Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC).

À noter par ailleurs : the researchers speculate that fish oil supplements containing EPA may increase the risk of CTE if, by impairing cellular recovery, it exacerbates the effects of mild concussions that can easily go unchecked.

Plus précisément, this idea of fish oil being a one-size-fits-all benefit doesn't work once you start investigating interactions," says neuroscientist Onur Eskiocak, from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.

Dans la foulée, Past studies have linked the consumption of fish oil to possible protection against several health concerns, including brain diseases like dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

À ce stade, a new study has found that fish oil supplements may not be beneficial for people who have experienced repeated mild traumatic brain injuries.
