Military Launches Fundraising Drive for Modern Housing Complex

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has initiated a fundraising luncheon to raise GH¢190 million for the first phase of a comprehensive redevelopment of the Burma Camp housing project at the Ghana Military Academy in Teshie. The project, which comprises 250 housing units, is part of a broader strategy to upgrade military infrastructure with high-rise buildings, addressing a persistent accommodation deficit while maximizing land use. The groundbreaking ceremony is set for July 3, 2026, with completion targeted within one year.

Colonial-Era Structures Deemed Unsafe and Outdated

Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General William Agyapong, highlighted that many existing structures at Burma Camp date back to the colonial era and no longer meet modern standards of safety, comfort, and dignity. He recalled the stark contrast between the current deplorable conditions and what he first saw 52 years ago as a child growing up at El-Wak barracks. “The vision is clear: to build a modern, well-planned, multi-level residential community designed to provide dignified accommodation, improved living standards and long-term sustainability for our personnel,” he said.

Manpower Growth Outpaces Housing, Widening Gap

Emerging security threats in the sub-region over the past decade have driven a strategic increase in GAF manpower, but personnel growth has not been matched by commensurate accommodation. The CDS indicated that this has created a significant housing gap across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, exerting pressure on personnel and their families. The redevelopment project aims to begin bridging this gap and improving poor utility services confronting the GAF.

Phased Plan to Triple Capacity on Reduced Land

Upon completion of all five phases, Burma Camp’s accommodation capacity will triple while using only a portion of the available land.ormitory block, one-bedroom apartment block, two-bedroom apartment block, and three-bedroom apartment blocks. The project is expected to be delivered through a public-private partnership supported by government contributions.

Government and Private Sector Pledge Support

Acting Minister for Defence Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in a speech read by Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, underscored the strategic importance of the redevelopment plan and commended the military high command for initiating it. He reiterated that the government has already commenced a housing project expected to deliver about 2,000 units, part of a long-term plan to construct up to 10,000 housing units for the armed forces. Guest of Honour Sir Samuel Esson Jonah, Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, expressed concern about the deplorable state of housing for the armed forces and urged the private sector to commit resources. He emphasized that success hinges on clarity of vision, credibility of leadership, accountability in process, and alignment in purpose.

GREDA and Corporate Donors Step Forward

Representing the Ghana Real Estate Developers Association (GREDA), Kwahu Paramount Chief and CEO of GHS Housing Limited Daasebre Akuamoah Boateng III commended the GAF leadership and assured full support. “We at GREDA are glad to be involved and I want to assure you that, as partners, we will deliver on this project throughout as developers,” he said, announcing a pledge of one housing unit. Other private donors include Jospong Group of Companies, VIP Transport, Bank of Ghana, Imperial Homes, National Investment Bank, TT Brothers, and Dzata Cement.

No Military Land Handed to Ibrahim Mahama, Says Official

Amid the fundraising drive, a separate statement emerged: “No Military land handed to Ibrahim Mahama — Brogya Genfi.” The remark, attributed to a figure named Brogya Genfi, appears to address speculation about land allocations, though no further details were provided. The redevelopment project remains focused on upgrading existing military land at Burma Camp.
