Cancellation and a Promise of Continuity

Amazon Prime Video has canceled Gen V after two seasons, but the storylines from its abandoned third season may live on in other corners of the Vought Universe. Eric Kripke, showrunner of The Boys, confirmed that Amazon is interested in hearing pitches for new stories that could absorb elements from the scrapped season. “It's very early days, because we're focusing on getting Vought Rising out into the world, but Amazon has expressed an interest, and they want to hear more potential stories in the world,” Kripke told Entertainment Weekly. He added that the team is internally brainstorming a couple of different ideas, and that they all have the opportunity to absorb at least some of the Gen V gang.

The Lost Season: Marie's Journey to Control Her Powers

Kripke had previously expressed excitement for a specific storyline in the scrapped Gen V Season 3, which centered on the character Marie learning to control her powers. “This idea that Marie is powerful, but that's not the end of her story. She has to learn how to control it,” he said. While he declined to share details, Kripke said he remains hopeful that the storyline can be realized in some form. “We're still hopeful we can find a way to do it. So, unfortunately, I can't share it,” he added.

Kripke's Role in the Cancellation Decision

After the cancellation was announced, Kripke clarified that he was not responsible for the decision. “I did not cancel the show. One, I don't have the power to do that,” he told the outlet. “Two, I was fighting to keep the show, almost more than anybody else on Earth. So I'm as bummed as everybody else out there.” The decision to end Gen V came despite its strong premiere for Season 2, which drew 424 million minutes viewed in its first three episodes, ranking eighth on Nielsen's streaming top 10 originals chart. That was the show's largest weekly total ever, with two-thirds of that audience coming from adults 18-49. However, the show failed to make the top 10 again except for one additional week during the season.

Gen V's Place in the Vought Universe

Gen V premiered in 2023 and was set at Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, where young supes train for a chance to join The Seven. The cast included Jaz Sinclair, Lizze Broadway, Maddie Phillips, London Thor, Derek Luh, Asa Germann, Sean Patrick Thomas, and Hamish Linklater. The series was developed by Craig Rosenberg, Evan Goldberg, and Kripke. Executive producers included showrunner Michele Fazekas, Seth Rogen, James Weaver, Neal H. Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Ken Levin, Jason Netter, Garth Ennis, Darick Robertson, Michaela Starr, Ori Marmur, Thomas Schnauz, Steve Boyum, and Brant Engelstein. The series was produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with Kripke Enterprises, Point Grey Pictures, and Original Film.

What Comes Next: Vought Rising and Beyond

With The Boys set to end after its fifth season and Gen V not returning, the only confirmed upcoming series in the Vought Universe is Vought Rising, a prequel following Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) in the 1950s. That show is slated to premiere in 2027, with an early tease expected in The Boys Season 5. Additionally, the spin-off The Boys: Mexico remains in development. Kripke and executive producer Evan Goldberg stated that Gen V characters' stories will continue in The Boys Season 5 and other VCU projects on the horizon. “You'll see them again,” they said in a statement.

The Broader Implications for the Franchise

The cancellation of Gen V marks a significant shift in the Vought Universe's expansion strategy. While the franchise has been a major success for Amazon, the decision to end Gen V after two seasons suggests a consolidation of resources around the flagship series and the upcoming prequel. Kripke's hints that Gen V storylines may be absorbed into other projects indicate a flexible approach to continuity. The fate of Marie and other characters now rests on which ideas gain traction within Amazon's development pipeline. As Kripke put it, “We'll see which ones get traction, but they all have the opportunity to absorb at least some of the Gen V gang, and that's very much by design.”

The bottom line

  • Gen V is canceled after two seasons, but its storylines may continue in other Vought Universe projects.
  • Eric Kripke fought to keep the show but lacked the authority to reverse the cancellation.
  • The scrapped third season would have focused on Marie learning to control her powers.
  • Gen V Season 2 had a strong premiere with 424 million minutes viewed but failed to sustain ratings.
  • Characters from Gen V will appear in The Boys Season 5 and future VCU projects.
  • The only confirmed upcoming spin-off is Vought Rising, set for 2027.
