A Mother’s First Day Back, Handcuffed to a Killer

Fresh out of idyllic maternity leave, prison officer Amber Todd (Izuka Hoyle) is assigned to transport Tibor Stone (Tahar Rahim), a prisoner so dangerous he cannot be trusted with his own insulin pump. The police need his testimony to bring down an organised crime syndicate, but the syndicate’s lackeys are determined to kill him before he reaches court. Amber and Tibor find themselves dodging bullets, swimming in open water, and eliminating threats — while handcuffed together.

The Handcuff Business: A Cat-and-Mouse Turned Psychological Drama

What attracted Hoyle to 'Prisoner' was the handcuff concept itself. “It’s the concept of these two very different people handcuffed together, put through their paces, given the same objective, and how the story changes from a cat-and-mouse format to a psychological drama about what that does to two people, specifically Amber,” she said. The physicality of the role excited her; she would have liked to do even more stunts, but health and safety concerns required stunt professionals — watched on by a jealous Hoyle.

A Reluctant Heroine: Maternal Instincts in an Inhumane World

Amber Todd represents softness and tenderness in a world of chaos, Hoyle explained. “You’ve got this high-octane, high-action thriller, but then you have this woman at the center of it [who] represents a lot of softness and tenderness and the human aspect [of being] in a really inhumane world.” The series opens with a scene of Amber’s family in a cocoon — her baby’s heartbeat synced with hers — before she is catapulted into violence. Unlike Tibor, she is not capable of sociopathic acts of violence, forcing her to rely on her morality and maternal instincts.

Chemistry with Tahar Rahim: ‘We Instantly Clicked and Fell in Love’

Hoyle described Rahim as “one of the greatest scene partners I’ve had the pleasure to work with.” The two actors built a strong on-screen chemistry that Hoyle said came from an instant click. “We instantly clicked and fell in love, so to speak,” she told The Hollywood Reporter. The series also stars Finn Bennett, Eddie Marsan, and Laurie Davidson.

From 'Six' to 'Prisoner': Hoyle’s Rising Trajectory

Hoyle’s first big role was in the original production of 'Six: The Musical', followed by her film debut in 2018’s 'Mary Queen of Scots'. She has since appeared in fantasy series 'The Wheel of Time', British sitcom 'Big Boys', and cosy crime drama 'Ludwig'. She also worked with one-shot mastermind Philip Barantini on 'Boiling Point'. Hoyle said she relished the chance to play an atypical lead — a woman whose strength comes from her humanity rather than violence.

What’s Next: ‘Something Camp and Wonderful’

Looking ahead, Hoyle expressed a desire to take on a very different kind of role. “Something camp and wonderful, something really loud. I’d quite like to show off,” she said. For now, she hopes viewers will embrace 'Prisoner' as a high-speed thriller that satisfies the modern appetite for binge-watching. “It feeds the beast, but it’s tasteful as well,” she said. “Matt’s made it in such a classy way that I think it satisfies the taste buds. It doesn’t overpower you.”
